In a Jar is a low-fi, sci-fi quarter-hour special about LOVE, WAR, and Kevin.
Made between 2019 and 2022, In a Jar was my first project after a long break from producing art. I wanted to make a piece that might air on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. The process of making this piece helped me understand my own identity as a non-binary artist.
Principal photography was 4 days, broken up over two non-consecutive weekends. We shot on a Red Raven with 4096x1728 resolution.
Post-production stretched from March 2020 until July 2021.
Preliminary build of the main set. We built the foreground counter out of 2x4 stick lumber. The background shelving units were from U-Line.
The counters now have their tops and are painted. The wooden wall flats have been painted and are drying. Additional flats in the lower left await painting.
Building sets in a 15x20' basement quickly gets crowded!
For Robert's wall-busting shot, I used 1/8th inch dry wall and pre-cut sections into the wall. The symmetrical shape of the wall breaks represents Robert's very organized robot nature.
Safety was my number one priority with this shot. Pictured above is the test frame that I busted through a few months before the actual shoot.
Our director of photography Matt Nease and Grip Alex Badillo setup the insert shot on some of the final jars.
We filmed on a Red Raven 4K camera and are using a Quasar Science 4' Rainbow light for backlighting & some reflected fill. Additional over-head lumination is provided by an LED panel.
I originally wanted to shoot in late March, but very thankfully, someone had a conflict that caused us to push the shoot up! Principal photography was across two non-consecutive weekends in February 2020.
We used a jib for the early sequences to keep the shots smooth & stable. We needed to shoot the script mostly in order due to the later destruction of the Studio J wall.
